What Are Fiabe Italiane? A Guide for Families
When we think of European fairy tales, we usually think of the Brothers Grimm or Charles Perrault. But Italy has its own extraordinary folklore tradition, as rich and varied as its cuisine.
Italo Calvino: Italy's Grimm
In 1956, Italo Calvino (1923-1985) published "Fiabe Italiane," a collection of 200 tales from every region of Italy. Calvino did for Italy what the Brothers Grimm did for Germany.
What makes Italian tales different
- Wit over strength: Italian heroes like Giovanni triumph through cleverness
- Mediterranean humour: Stories like The Fox and the Wolf have a uniquely playful wit
- Regional diversity: Every region contributes โ Tuscany, Sicily, Venice, Piedmont
- Transformation: Italian tales are full of magical transformations like The Pig King and The Crab Prince
Fun facts
- Calvino spent two years collecting all 200 tales from across Italy
